Friday, 25th September 2009

chessFor this weeks playlist we have decided to look at Chess Records, a pioneering rock and roll label and perhaps one of the most culturally important imprints to have ever existed. The label shone light on the talents of; Chuck Berry, Bo Diddley, Muddy Waters, Etta James, John Lee Hooker,  Big Bill Broonzy & Washboard Sam, Howlin' Wolf and Memphis Slim amongst many many many others. The Chicago label was run by brothers Leonard and Phil Chess for just shy of 20 years out of there own studios, championing R&B, early soul, gospel, rock & roll, and the occasional jazz title.Tune in via Spotify right here.
